Auburn head football coach Alex Golesh is going old school in preparing the Tigers for his first season on the Plains.
In a move that sparked “Remember the Titans” memes online, Golesh announced Tuesday that Auburn will be getting off campus for fall camp this year in an effort to remove distractions and focus on “just us.”
“Eliminate every single bit of distraction we possibly can,” Golesh told reporters before the team departed the Woltosz Football Center Tuesday. “They’re excited about it, there’s no nothing. No girlfriends, no dogs, cats, whatever guys are into. It’s truly just us for the next 13 days, which is absolutely huge for us. We need it.”
The team will be staying at the Grand National Marriott in Opelika, about a 15 minute trip from Auburn’s campus. While that might not seem like far, it’s the separation from campus and the distractions it brings that will benefit players and coaches, Golesh said.
“Nothing else really going on other than us, the team and our staff,” he said. “We’ll take their car keys tonight and they won’t have them,” Golesh said. “Teaching what a day in a structure should look like for an elite, high-level athlete.”
“We talk so much about process. We’re trying to build it for them to where you wake up, you get on a bus, and then you’ll get back later in the evening. There are no distractions.”
Auburn opens the season on Sept. 5 against Baylor in Atlanta.
