WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee approved Thomas Govan Jr.’s nomination Thursday to serve as a U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Alabama.
Govan’s nomination now heads to the full Senate for a vote. The committee passed his nomination along party lines during a business meeting.
Govan will replace Kevin P. Davidson, the current acting U.S. attorney for the district. Louis V. Franklin Sr., who retired in 2021, was the last U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Alabama to be confirmed by the Senate.
President Donald Trump nominated Govan in October alongside Phil Williams Jr., who is nominated to serve as a U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Alabama.
“I am certain that he will serve our state, the middle district and our great nation well,” said U.S. Sen. Katie Britt, R-Alabama, a member of the Judiciary Committee, during the committee vote. “I have complete confidence in him, his character and his integrity.”
Govan has been the chief of the Criminal Trials Division of the Alabama Attorney General’s office. He previously ran unsuccessfully for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals in 2024.
The state’s middle district includes Montgomery and Dothan.
A U.S. attorney typically serves for four years or until a new appointment is made. Interim appointments are also possible.
Williams’ nomination for the Northern District of Alabama has yet to be considered in the Senate. He will replace Prim Escalona, who has been serving in the role since 2020.
