Former U.S. Senator and Democrat Doug Jones raised $483,000 in his first full month in the race to be Alabama’s next governor, bringing his total raised since his November announcement to about $588,000, according to campaign contribution reports filed Monday.
U.S. Senator and Republican gubernatorial candidate Tommy Tuberville reported raising $259,000 in December, but still has an impressive monetary advantage on Jones and others in the race, ending December with $6.7 million on hand.
Jones took in two major contributions of $25,000. The campaign also reported receiving $3,500 in contributions from two political action committees: Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams’ Speak Up PAC and U.S. Sen. Christopher Coons’, D-DE, Blue Hen Federal PAC. U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth’s, D-IL, principal campaign committee also donated $1,000.
A statement from Jones’ campaign treasurer April Hodges touted the prevalence of small individual donations in the month of December, what she called “a powerful show of grassroots support.” Jones’ December fundraising came from over 7,000 individual donors with more than 6,000 contributions coming in at under $100, the statement said. Jones’ total fundraising for the election cycle is $588,000 with the new December report.
“These numbers reflect what we’ve felt on the ground every day: Alabamians across the state are ready for leadership that puts people first,” the statement reads. “This campaign is being fueled by everyday folks chipping in what they can because they believe in the vision Senator Jones is fighting for.”
Tuberville received two major contributions amounting to $100,000.
Tuberville’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but has previously said he is not accepting PAC money in this race. The campaign did take $20,000 from businesses – $5,000 from CSX Transportation Inc in Jacksonville, FL, and $15,000 from AT&T in St. Louis, MO.
Jones spent $22,000 in December, all on fundraising. Tuberville spent $349,000 overall, with major expenditures in fundraising, advertising and polling.
The Tuberville campaign spent $64,000 at the Virginia-based polling firm Cygnal and $40,00 at policy firm The Advocacy Group in Alexandria, Va., both of which were also large expenditures in November.
Democrats Will Boyd and Chad “Chig” Martin, independent Stacy Lee George and Republican Ken McFeeters have also raised money in the race.
So far in the race, the six candidates who have filed campaign contribution reports have raised $9.79 million in monetary contributions and shelled out $2.55 million in monetary expenditures.
Monday was candidates’ first day to qualify with the state’s Republican and Democrat parties for the 2026 election cycle. The last day to qualify is Jan. 23. Primaries are May 19.
