Trump endorses Alabama House GOP incumbents, mum on AL-1 race

WASHINGTON — In a series of Truth Social posts Sunday night, President Donald Trump endorsed Alabama’s four incumbent House Republicans, but noticeably absent from his feed was an endorsement in the competitive GOP primary for Alabama’s 1st Congressional District in 2026.

Trump backed U.S. Reps. Mike Rogers, R-Saks, Robert Aderholt, R-Haleyville, Dale Strong, R-Huntsville and Gary Palmer, R-Birmingham, in their reelection bids.

But the president did not weigh in on the race to take for the AL-1 seat, which former Rep. Jerry Carl and State Rep. Rhett Marques are vying for in 2026. They’re running to succeed Rep. Barry Moore, R-Enterprise, who is running for U.S. Senate.

The election for the 1st district seat, which runs through the state’s most southern counties, is shaping up to be tight, with both candidates garnering support from current congressional lawmakers in their bids. A Trump endorsement could prove pivotal in the close race.

Marques raised about $170,000 more than Carl through the end of September, according to the latest campaign finance reports. In the third quarter of 2025, Marques raised about $494,000. He has since surpassed the $500,000 fundraising mark, according to his campaign.

Carl raised about $320,000 through the end of September.

On Sunday, Trump did not make any endorsement in the race for Alabama’s open Senate seat. He also did not announce any support for Alabama’s two Democratic-held seats, including Reps. Terri Sewell of the 7th District and Shomari Figures of the 2nd District.

In Trump’s endorsement of Rogers, he highlighted the lawmaker as the first House Armed Services Committee chair from Alabama, who is “working tirelessly to advance our AMERICA FIRST Agenda.”
